How to Prepare for Concrete Pumping (and What Mix to Order)

A well-prepared site is the biggest factor in a fast, low-cost pour. Use this checklist before pump day.
1. Order a Pump Mix
- Tell the ready-mix plant the concrete is going through a line pump.
- Ask for a pump mix with pea gravel (3/8″ / 10 mm stone).
- Keep the strength (MPa) your engineer or permit requires – the plant will adjust the mix.
- A workable slump (around 4–5 inches / 100–125 mm) pumps best. Don’t add extra water on site.
- Ask about air entrainment for exterior concrete exposed to freeze-thaw.
2. Schedule the Trucks
- Book the first truck about 30 minutes after the pump arrives, to allow setup.
- Ask the plant to send trucks back-to-back so the pump never waits.
- Order about 5–10% extra to cover the line and uneven subgrade.
3. Prepare the Site
- Forms, rebar, mesh and vapour barrier complete and inspected.
- A clear path for the line from the street to the pour.
- A spot for the pump and the ready-mix truck next to each other, on the driveway or street.
- Your finishing crew and tools on site before the first truck.
- Neighbours informed if the line crosses a shared side yard.
4. Washout
We clean out the pump and lines at the end of the pour. Let us know if the site has a designated washout area.
