Line Pump vs Boom Pump: Which One Do You Need?

Both pumps move concrete from the ready-mix truck to the pour. The difference is how they get it there – and that decides which one is right for your job and your budget.
| Line pump | Boom pump | |
|---|---|---|
| How it reaches | Steel and rubber hoses laid on the ground | Hydraulic arm on a truck, over the top |
| Best for | Basements, footings, backyards, slabs, walls, tight access | Large volumes, high-rise, big commercial slabs |
| Space needed | A driveway or street parking spot | Large flat area for outriggers, clearance from wires and trees |
| Typical volume | Small to medium pours | Large pours |
| Mix | Pump mix, pea gravel / 3/8″ | Standard 3/4″ structural mixes |
| Cost | Lower minimum charge | Higher hourly rate and minimum |
Choose a Line Pump When…
- The pour is behind or under a house and a boom can’t see it.
- There are power lines, trees or neighbours’ roofs in the way.
- The volume is small to medium – a basement, footings, a patio, a garage slab.
- You want to keep the cost down.
Choose a Boom Pump When…
- You are pouring a large volume in one day.
- You need to place concrete several storeys up.
- The site is open with room for the truck and outriggers.
